Once-daily liraglutide injection for weight management.
Nevolat (generic Saxenda) is a once-daily injection you administer yourself to support weight loss. It contains liraglutide, similar to the natural hormone GLP-1. It helps you feel less hungry, slows stomach emptying and increases fullness. Nevolat is used alongside an active lifestyle and a calorie-controlled balanced diet; exercise helps you maintain a healthy weight when you stop treatment.

Nevolat (liraglutide 6mg/ml) is a self-injectable weight loss treatment. It contains liraglutide, which is very similar to a naturally occurring hormone in your body called GLP-1. After a meal, GLP-1 is naturally released from your intestines. It works in a part of the brain involved in the regulation of appetite and food intake. Nevolat increases feelings of satiety (fullness) and decreases hunger. As a result, many people feel satisfied and eat less food, supporting weight loss when combined with diet and exercise.
Nevolat can help you feel full for longer and therefore less hungry, which supports eating less and reducing body weight. The reduced appetite helps with weight loss and long-term weight maintenance. When you join PrivateDoc we assess your individual circumstances to see if Nevolat is appropriate for your weight management.
Nevolat packs start from £64.99
Nevolat comes in a 3ml pre-filled pen; you can usually choose between one and five pens. When you first start Nevolat, a single pen will last about 17 days on the starting dose. See Nevolat pack sizes and prices
Nevolat can only be used as a weight-loss treatment if you have previously tried and failed to lose weight through diet and exercise alone.
You can expect to lose a minimum of 5% of your initial body weight after completing 12 weeks of treatment at 3.0mg liraglutide daily. If you have not lost 5% of your initial body weight after 12 weeks at 3.0mg, then treatment should be discontinued at this stage.
Liraglutide has been studied extensively in multiple clinical trials to establish its clinical benefits for weight management.
Nevolat comes in a 3ml pre-filled weight loss injection pen with a clear and colourless or almost colourless solution. Pens are supplied with the needles you need. Store unused pens in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C) before first use. Once you start using a pen, you can usually keep it for 1 month at room temperature (2 to 30°C) or in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze.
When you take Nevolat you gradually increase your dose in 0.6mg steps until you reach the maintenance dose of 3mg daily:
How long does one Nevolat pen last?
Increasing the dose slowly over time should minimise side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. If you cannot tolerate side effects as you increase, stay on the same dose for 2 continuous weeks; if they are still not tolerable after 2 weeks, consider stopping treatment as advised by your clinician.
The maximum recommended daily dosage of liraglutide for this indication is 3.0mg. Try to inject at the same time each day, with or without food or drink.
You must continue your diet and exercise plan while taking Nevolat. Always use Nevolat exactly as your prescriber tells you.
When you first start Nevolat, a single pen will last 17 days and the first full pack of five pens will last six weeks. At the maintenance dose, a pack of five pens will last 30 days.
Nevolat is a self-administered subcutaneous injection under the skin. The best sites are the front of your waist (abdomen), the front of your thigh or the upper arm. You must take extra care not to inject into a vein or muscle.
If you accidentally use more Nevolat than you should, speak to a doctor or go to a hospital straight away. You may experience nausea or vomiting and may need medical treatment.
If you forget a dose, you can inject it as soon as you remember if it is within 12 hours of your usual time. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip the dose and inject the next dose the following day at the usual time. Never use a double dose or increase the next dose to make up for a missed dose. If there has been more than 72 hours between doses, you may need to return to the 0.6mg starting dose and work through the titration again as advised.
You cannot use Nevolat if you:
If you have any of the following conditions you will need to speak with the doctor as Nevolat may not be appropriate for you:
As with all medication, Nevolat can be associated with unwanted side effects. Although usually mild, some can be more severe, which may result in your treatment being stopped. You should always read the patient information leaflet fully before you begin treatment.
When you first start your treatment, you may experience stomach upset, such as vomiting or diarrhoea, and may lose some bodily fluids. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Most mild side effects settle once your body gets used to the medication. If any side effect persists, stop the treatment and talk to a doctor.
Sometimes side effects can be very serious, such as severe allergic reactions. If you get symptoms such as problems breathing, swelling of your face or throat, or a fast heartbeat, get medical help immediately.
Rarely, inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) has been reported. Pancreatitis is serious. If you have severe and persistent pain in the abdomen that may reach through to your back, with nausea or vomiting, stop taking Nevolat immediately and get medical help.
Side effects can include, but are not limited to:
Very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 users)
Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 users)
Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
Rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)
For complete details about all side effects always read the Patient Information Leaflet.
The information we provide is based on the manufacturer’s materials and current evidence.
Patients on treatment plans are set weight loss targets they can track in their patient portal. In general, patients using Nevolat can expect to lose a minimum of 5% of their starting weight by week 12 of treatment at the maintenance dose, where clinically appropriate.
We set qualifying patients a weight loss target after 12 weeks of Nevolat treatment; typically this is a minimum of 5% of starting weight where appropriate.
At PrivateDoc we aim to continue treatment and support until we have helped you achieve a healthy BMI where suitable.
As obesity is often a long-term condition, you may need longer-term treatment. How long you remain on Nevolat depends on many factors discussed with our prescribers during your consultation. Once a healthy BMI is achieved you may no longer need a prescription.
Whilst on any of our prescription weight loss treatments we recommend following a calorie-controlled diet. We partnered with nutritionist Glen Matten on our PrivateDoc diet guide. PrivateDoc Diet Guide

Nevolat can only be used if you have previously tried and failed to lose weight through diet and exercise alone. We review your health and medicines in consultation.
Nevolat is injected once daily from a pre-filled pen. Your dose is increased gradually up to 3.0mg daily. Store pens as described in the patient information leaflet.
Inject under the skin into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm—never into a vein or muscle. If you miss a dose or use too much, follow the patient information leaflet or seek urgent advice when appropriate.
We need your full medical history, pregnancy plans, allergies, age, diabetes and GLP-1 medicines, heart, liver, kidney, gut and thyroid conditions, and all other medicines including anticoagulants.
Very common effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation, especially when starting. Serious pancreatitis or allergic reactions are rare but urgent—read the Patient Information Leaflet and seek help if you have severe symptoms.
Weight loss is gradual; many programmes use a review around 12 weeks and may look for at least around 5% weight loss where clinically appropriate.
Duration depends on your response, side effects and goals with your prescriber. Obesity is often managed longer term until a healthy weight range is reached.
