What is hay fever?
Hay fever is essentially an allergy to pollen (tree, grass, weeds, and so on) and is most prevalent from early spring to late autumn. Sufferers are more likely to experience symptoms when the weather is warm, windy or humid, as this is usually when the pollen count is at its highest. It is estimated that hay fever affects one in four of the population.
Pollen is a fine powder released by the male region (anther) of a plant, carried either by animals or the wind to the female region (stigma) of a different plant as part of the plant's normal reproductive cycle.
Symptoms can include a runny or congested nose, sneezing and coughing, watery or itchy eyes, an itchy throat, ears, nose and mouth, fatigue, and pain around the temples or forehead. If you already suffer from asthma or COPD, hay fever may also worsen your respiratory symptoms.
As there is no cure for hay fever at present, treatment is aimed at controlling and managing symptoms. Our range of prescription allergy and hay fever treatments can help you get back to normal when you need it most.
