Best Medicine For Erectile Dysfunction Without Side Effects

All drugs carry a risk of side effects, some are more common than others and some carry a lower risk. The chances of you suffering from the side effects will depend on how your body responds to the drug in question.

There are four main medications for the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction:

  • Sildenafil (Viagra)
  • Avanafil (Spedra)
  • Tadalafil (Cialis)
  • Vardenafil (Levitra)

All of the above medications work in a similar way, they relax your muscles and boost the blood flow to the penis which makes getting and maintaining an erection easier. They are phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (PDE5i’s), which work by inhibiting an enzyme that may reduce the potency of an erection.

It should be noted that if you are on medications that contain nitrates, such as nitroglycerin used for the treatment of chest pains, you should avoid taking any ED medications. The reason for this is that a combination of these drugs may cause dangerously low blood pressure.

Effectiveness of the Medications

Sildenafil: Viagra is an oral medication that takes around thirty minutes to take effect. With stimulation, the effects will usually last for around four hours. Viagra has a proven record of effectiveness and safety and remains an important treatment option for men who suffer with ED.

Avanafil: Spedra can begin to work as little as fifteen minutes after taking and may last for around six hours.

Tadalafil: Cialis needs to be taken around two hours before you plan on having any sexual intercourse. It does however last much longer than the other medications and may last for up to thirty-six hours.

Vardenafil: Levitra also take around thirty minutes to begin to work, and the effects can last a little longer than Viagra, usually around five hours. Staxyn however, which dissolves in the mouth, begins to work after just fifteen minutes. They both contain the same active ingredient, it is just the method by which you take them that differs slightly.

You may find that you suit one medication over another. It is worth discussing them with your doctor and maybe trying a different one. If you find that the one you are taking is not as efficient as you would like, or if you are suffering from particular side effects, it is worth trying another.

They may all work in a similar way, and even have similar side effects, but this doesn’t mean that you will react the same way to each of the tablets.

What Are The Side Effects?

As with any drug, side effects are a possibility. This doesn’t mean that you will suffer with any side effects, but it is worth talking through any concerns you may have with your doctor.

Common side effects include (this list is not exhaustive):

  • Headaches
  • Upset Stomach
  • Heartburn
  • Hot flushes
  • Nasal congestion
  • Vision problems such as sensitivity to light and blurring
  • Back and muscle aches
  • Hearing impairment
  • Hair loss

When to Seek Medical Attention

You should seek emergency treatment if you have an erection that lasts for over four hours and that occurs without sexual arousal. This is known as priapism and it is a condition where the blood has become trapped in the penis and can’t flow out. If priapism goes untreated it can lead to scarring and permanent erectile dysfunction.

Other reasons to seek emergency treatment also include:

  • A sudden rash
  • Painful erection
  • Falling unconscious (fainting)
  • Chest pains - if you have taken Viagra or Cialis within the past 48 hours, do not take nitroglycerin. Seek immediate medical attention and make sure you have someone with you. Also make sure you inform the emergency doctor what medication you took and what dosage.
  • Itching or burning when you urinate

Vision Problems

If you have suffered any loss of vision after taking any of the medications, you should contact your doctor and cease using the medication immediately.

There is a very rare condition called NAION, which is short for Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy, that has affected a minority of men when using these drugs. This condition causes a sudden loss of eyesight due to a blockage in the flow of blood supplying the optic nerve.

The men who are at a higher risk of suffering from NAION are:

  • Men over 50 years of age
  • Smokers
  • Men who already suffer with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.
  • Some pre existing eye conditions may also cause issues.

Which Drug Is The Least Likely To Cause Side Effects

Sildenafil, Viagra, is the most commonly prescribed and effective of all the ED medications. It takes around thirty minutes to take effect and lasts for approximately four hours. It is also the one that carries the most risk of side effects.

The most common side effects of Viagra are abnormal vision (blue-tinged or blurriness), back pain, dizziness, flushing, muscle pains, nausea, headache, rash, stuffy or runny nose and an upset stomach. Rare side effects include stroke, irregular heartbeat and seizures.

Men who are particularly concerned about the side effects of Sildenafil, Viagra, may wish to try starting on Tadalafil, Cialis.

The most common side effects of Cialis are indigestion and headache. Less frequently men have experienced back pain, facial flushing, dizziness, nasal congestion and muscle aches. However, the higher risk side effects are still there, just even less commonly than with sildenafil. Levitra takes about 30 minutes to start working and the effects last a little longer than Viagra, about 5 hours. Staxyn dissolves in your mouth. It contains the same active ingredient as Levitra and can begin working in about 15 minutes.

The most common side effects are again headaches and flushing. The less common side effects include dizziness, indigestion, nausea, nasal congestion and blue-tinged vision.

Avanafil, Spedra has similar side effects to Levitra, however, studies have shown that a 50-milligram dose of Spedra has the lowest rate of side effects of any of the medications. Whereas Viagra and Cialis, when given in higher doses, were causing side effects between 21 and 22 percent of the time.

The side effects will depend on which drug is used along with which other enzymes they inhibit. Viagra’s main side effects are reportedly to do with visual changes, whereas Cialis will more often cause muscle pain.

The common side effects of facial flushing, congestion, headache and upset stomachs are not usually as much of a reported cause for concern as the lack of efficacy.

Conclusion

It is not possible to have any medication that is 100% guaranteed free from side effects at this moment in time. Your lifestyle choices, your existing medications and your bodies response to the chemical makeup of each medication will determine your reaction to it.

Viagra may carry the highest risk of a reaction, but it has also been proven to be the smost effective and safest of all the ED medication out there. You may find lower risk of suffering from a side effect with an alternative medication, but you may also face lower efficiency.

Each of the medications work in a similar way. Some last longer, some act faster and some may not agree with you. If you are experiencing any issues with the Erectile Dysfunction medication that you are taking, talk to your GP. It may be that you need to try a different one, or there may be some other factor at work here that is interfering with the success of your treatment.
